All at Cray Wanderers were saddened to hear of the passing of a great ex-Cray Wanderers centre-forward, Butch Dunn who passed away on 1st August. Cray Wanderers historian, Jerry Dowlen leaves a memoriam piece for Butch. This is particularly poignant as Butch signed for Cray from tonight’s opponents Fisher in 1977.
Cray Wanderers FC are saddened to hear of the recent death of Butch Dunn who was our star centre forward in the 1977/78 season. Jimmy Wakeling was the manager who brought Butch to Oxford Road after he earlier had played for Aveley and Fisher Athletic. Butch became an instant hit with Cray fans netting 32 goals in 29 games. The Wands won the London Spartan League championship that season and switched to the Kent League the following year. Butch scored twice in Cray’s opening game before moving on to Bromley where he played under the former Cray manager Johnny Biddle. He had a stellar career at Hayes Lane where he scored prolifically for Bromley at the higher level of the Isthmian League. He played for Tooting & Mitcham in 1984. Butch Dunn is fondly remembered by all Cray fans who saw him play at Oxford Road.
Our club sends our sincere condolences to his family. He was a very good footballer and a loving family man who will be much missed by us all.
