All at Cray Wanderers wish Gareth Southgate and the England squad all the best for Euro 2024 in Germany which begins today.
We also in particular wish Marc Guehi, central defender who started his youth career with Cray Wanderers before heading out to the likes of Chelsea, Swansea City and Crystal Palace and eventually for England. Marc came to the UK from Abidjan in the Ivory Coast and settled in Grove Park, Lewisham and played for Cray Wanderers between 2007-09 from six years old, coached by Steve Owen before joining the Chelsea Academy where he stayed until 2018. He broke into the first team at Chelsea on a couple of occasions but earned rave reviews at Swansea City where he spent a season on loan and then signed for Crystal Palace where he became club captain.
At international level, Marc was part of the England U17s side beaten in the European Championship Final in 2017 but was part of the World Cup Winning side later that year. He represented England at U21 level and was picked for the first team for the first time in 2022 and has been capped 11 times ahead of the European Championships, his first tournament.
Please also see here a map showing which grassroots club each member of the squad started out with which shows the importance to any club of any size of a positive youth setup which most definitely Cray Wanderers do and moving in the right direction.
Also a note for supporters that England’s three group games in Germany will be screened live on the big screens at Flamingo Park. Doors open at 3 pm with all beers/drinks priced at £4 a pint and all welcome to come and cheer on England’s quest for glory.
