Cray Wanderers Women vs Sevenoaks Town Women
SECWFL Premier – Sunday 13th October – Match Report
Cray Wanderers Women 1
Blanche 90+7
Sevenoaks Town Women 4
George 31, 67, Cleary 48, 80
Cray Wanderers 100% winning start to the SECWFL Premier came to an end and Sevenoaks Town continued theirs after victory at a chilly Flamingo Park. The defeat puts Cray down to 6th in the table with nine points while Sevenoaks Town moved up to 2nd on 12 points one behind leaders London Road.
The game pitted two teams in good form and the match began at a blistering pace and Sevenoaks came close in the opening minute when Ellie George was put through on goal but Sam Sharp did well to turn her shot aside.
For Cray, Olivia Gregory down the left saw a shot blocked and at the other end Charlotte Bennett set up George who lofted a shot onto the roof of the net from outside the area.
Cray had to make an early change when Claire Goldsmith had to go off with an injury in the 6th minute and was replaced by Megan Webster.
The match then settled down for a spell after the quick start although for Sevenoaks’ Angelika Gomoika’s free kick down the left into the area was headed wide by Zoe Parsons while for Cray, Hannah Gilmour’s cross hit the top of the net.
In the 23rd minute, Cray came close when Gilmour’s ball into the area came to Katie Jackson whose effort was blocked and came to Olivia Gregory who curled a shot wide of the right post.
Then Cray pressed again and Chloe Ashdown played a great ball into the area and a Sevenoaks header came to Jackson who fired a shot wide.
Sevenoaks came close in the 29th minute Abi Washington down the left of the area saw her shot come back off the left post. Meanwhile for Cray, Ashdown fired over.
In the 31st minute, Sevenoaks made the breakthrough when a ball forward was latched onto by George who down the left of the area took the ball wide of Sharp and planted the ball into the back of the net.
Cray had a bit more of the play before half time but couldn’t quite create that clearcut chance to draw level and Sevenoaks came close just before the break when from a corner down the right from Hannah Cleary the ball was played to Lauren Parsons whose strike went just past the right post before Washington could get a touch.
HT: 0-1
The second half began with Sevenoaks adding a second goal just three minutes after the restart when Cleary was quickest to react to a loose pass out of defence and found space to score with a calm finish.
Sevenoaks were defending well and looking good going forward and from a corner from Gomoika was punched away under pressure by Sharp. Then, Washington saw a shot held by Sharp.
Cray did come close to pulling a goal back in the 65th minute when Webster found Danielle Smith and her cross to the far post came to Katie Jackson whose near post shot was pushed behind for a corner by Emily Urchin.
However, two minutes later it was 3-0 and a long way back for Cray as Ellie George scored her second with an unstoppable shot when cutting in from the right and firing into the net from shy of 30 yards.
For Cray, Jackson saw a shot blocked and following up Millie Main saw a shot go wide but was fouled in the process of shooting. From the free kick, Jackson’s effort was held by Urchin.
In the 80th minute, Sevenoaks added a fourth goal when Goimoka, George and Matilda Noble combined to set up Cleary who down the left of the area cleverly clipped a shot towards the far post and into the net.
Cray kept going until the end and Main saw a free kick deflected wide and Jackson was put through but Urchin claimed the ball despite getting clattered but looked a fair challenge.
The Wands did have the final say on the afternoon with a goal back in the 7th minute of added on time when a cross into the area from the left took out Urchin and at the far post Annemarie Blanche slotted into the net.
That was practically the last kick of the game and in the end Sevenoaks Town ended Cray’s three game league winning streak and over the game looked a good side while Cray will certainly regroup and go again next Sunday vs. Woodcombe Sports at Flamingo Park (20th October), 4.30 pm ko.
